How to Pay NHIF via M-Pesa

NHIF offers its beneficiaries an easy way of remitting their statutory monthly contributions through M-Pesa. The process is a fairly easy one that takes a few minutes and instantly reflects on your NHIF account.

  • Go to your Safaricom Menu
  • Select M-Pesa
  • Choose Pay Bill option, ENTER NHIF Paybill number 200222
  • On your account number section enter your national ID number.
  • Enter the amount you wish to contribute and press okay
  • Enter your M-Pesa PIN
  • Confirm the details then okay the transaction

You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-Pesa capturing the transaction.

When paying NHIF via phone transaction charges vary depending on the amount contributed to the scheme. A charge of 22 for amounts between Ksh 10-499 (where most self-employed individuals lie) to a maximum of Ksh 55 for those contributing between 50,000 -70000.

How can I check my NHIF  payment?

It is always important to be abreast of your health insurance contributions. This is especially true with employees whose contributions are normally availed by third parties to the scheme i.e. employers.

Visit NHIF Offices

You can check your NHIF payments physically by visiting the nearest NHIF offices. You will be required to avail you identification documents like ID number and your statement printed.

The Online Portal

However, not everybody has the time or is near any NHIF branch. Another option is using the NHIF portal to check your contribution status. To do this you will have to go online.

  • Go to nhif.or.ke
  • Sign up to access the self-service portal (only for registered members)If you are not registered you will need to register by filling in the prompts with your personal details, NHIF card number, and your valid email address. A confirmation link will be sent to your email and then you are set.
  • Log into your self-service portal filling in the password and username
  • Access your account statements.
Sending an SMS
  • Alternatively, you can use SMS
  • Compose a message with the letters ID leave a space then your ID number
  • Send this text to 21101

NHIF will send you back a message detailing your payments.
