As an NHIF member, knowing your status is always important as it gives you details about your account such as your monthly contributions and dependants among other things. Below, we look at the various ways on how to check NHIF status other than physically visiting a branch near you. These are:
- Online via the web
- Through your mobile phone
Checking NHIF Status Online
Unlike having to physically visit the NHIF office this approach is more convenient, time-saving and with fewer hassles. To check your status online you need to:
- Visit the official NHIF website (www.nhif.or.ke) through your phone, tablet or computer
- Sign in at the self-service portal if you already have registered, if it is your first time then you will need to register
- To register, you will need to have your NHIF card number, an email address and your phone number
- Fill in the prompts with the details asked for, save and then submit
- Create your own password which you will be using to log in using the online portal
- After you log in at the self-service portal, you can now check your NHIF account status online with details about your monthly NHIF contributions, balance, the months you defaulted and activation among other things
- Make sure you log out once you are done for security purposes
Checking NHIF Status via Phone
This method is also convenient and effective. To send the message you will need to have some airtime in your phone as the service charge is Kshs 10. To check NHIF status using a phone, you need to:
- Compose a new SMS on your phone, type the letters “ID” followed by space, and then your actual ID number or passport number where applicable. Say your ID number is 3456789 then you type ID 3456789.
- After you are done composing your message send it to 21101
- You will get back a text message with your NHIF account status after a short while
How Do I Know if NHIF Has Been Paid?
Late payment for the NHIF contributions attracts penalties and thus it is of importance for a member to know whether or not their contributions have been paid. For this, you can request for your NHIF statement. Payments via Mpesa may take between 24-48 hours to feature in your statement, but some payments can even be instant.
There are two ways to get your account statement:
- By sending an SMS to 21101 following the steps highlighted above on checking your status via phone
- NHIF statement via email by sending a request email, giving your ID number, to customercare@nhif.or.ke
How Do I Check my NHIF Statement Online?
To do this, all you have to do is log in into the online portal as highlighted above. Go to the payment options which allow you to make payment after which all your payment history reports and mini statements can be obtained.
Next time you are wondering how to check NHIF status use one of the above-mentioned ways. Always ensure your monthly contributions are paid in time and that you don’t miss on your payments to avoid inconveniences next time you need NHIF services.
