How to book train in SGR

Since its inception, SGR has cut down the travel time from Nairobi to Mombasa. The train enjoys high seat occupancy and booking due to its swift and comfortable travel. Customers can either book First class or Second class/economy class. So how do you book SGR?

Physically going to the Terminal booking points at either Miritini or Syokimau is one option. Though it may seem old school, it actually works. Ensure you have the cash to pay for the tickets. It is advantageous to do this since you can actually select the seat you want. This is contrary to booking online where you may be allocated a seat that you actually may not like.

How to book SGR online

SGR train tickets can be obtained through an online portal that allows customers to select the train (Express or intercounty), departure time and type of seat they want (First or second class) and make payments against the selections on Mpesa. This is how to book the SGR  train.

  • Go to https://metickets.krc.co.ke/
  • Select the type of train you want (Intercounty or Express)
  • Select departure (From) and Arrival points (To) either (Mombasa or Nairobi in the case of Express train. For intercounty there are many destinations and departure points e.g. Kibwezi, Voi,)
  • The next step is selecting the departure date. You can make selections from the miniature calendar or filling in the blank calendar dialogue box with your preferred date.
  • Click on the orange button “Book train’
  • You will be redirected to another page capturing the details of your bookings in addition to other information like(Number of seats open for both first and second class, departure and arrival time, an option to edit your booking information including the number of adults or children.
  • Click “Booking” below if satisfied with the details captured
  • On the next page enter your full names, ID number or passport number and nationality.
  • Enter your payment details, Mpesa number, and email address
  • Confirm the capture request
  • Agree to the terms and conditions by checking the box below select the two options of “Paying now or later.

How to book SGR via phone Using USSD code

  • Dial *639# and call
  • Enter amount and your Mpesa pin to complete the process
  • You will get an SMS confirming payment to SGR
  • SGR will send you a text with details of your ticket. Before travel, go to the booking office to get a print out of your ticket.

You can make group bookings for five people 7 days in advance or 9 days in advance for 20 passengers

How to book SGR via Mpesa Using Paybill number

This is the procedure of paying SGR via Mpesa

  • Go to Mpesa.
  • Click on Lipa na Mpesa.
  • Choose Playbill.
  • Enter the Business number as 809888
  • Choose Account n.o
  • Enter the word ‘Ticket’ as your account number.
  • Enter the Amount depending on the prevailing ticket rates for the class you want to use
  • Key your Mpesa Pin and confirm the purchase.
  • You will then receive a text message confirming your Purchase.
