HELB normally places adverts in the dailies and its official website for loan application. The adverts often spell out the criteria and requirements for a successful application. The loans disbursed can either be for undergraduate, TIVET OR Post graduate education.

HELB loan application requirements

The HELB requirements depend on whether you are applying for the first time, which level of higher education you are applying for e.g. TIVET, undergraduate or postgraduate.

  • Ensure you have a copy of your school leaving certificate
  • Possess a national identity card.In the case of undergraduate students you must not be self-sponsored
  • If you are a continuing student you must have not deferred your studies
  • Students in the public Technical, Vocational & Education Training (TVET) Institutes recognized by the Ministry of Education (MoE), a member of The Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) and placed by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS)
  • Direct Entry Self-Sponsored Students in the public Technical, Vocational & Education Training (TVET) Institutes recognized by the Ministry of Education (MoE), a member of The Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI)

HELB Loan Application process

  • Go to HELB website
  • Register by filling in your personal details which include name, ID number, email address, phone number etc.
  • Log in to your account
  • Click on HELB loan application form
  • Fill in the empty fields depending on the type of student you are Post graduate,TIVET or Undergraduate
  • Print two physical copies of HELB application form
  • Ensure your guarantors sign and fill in the relevant details
  • You can then either go to an advocate, Commissioner of oaths, County commissioners office to ascertain the particulars you have filled in.Ensure your forms carry official stamp and signature of the relevant authority
  • If you are a continuing student, you will need your dean’s stamp and signature of your form
  • Attach necessary supporting documents like photocopies of ID, KRA PIN certificate, to your application form.

You can opt to drop off the form at HELB offices in Anniversary towers or your nearest huduma center.

HELB loan application deadline for first time applicants

HELB usually advertises the deadlines on application forms on the dailies. Usually application is two months ahead of reporting dates. The applicant should also have a copy of their admission letter which means you can only apply after you receive the letter. This allows the applicant to process their HELB loan in time before reporting.

For continuing students they usually have to submit their forms before commencement of their academic year.
