How to get a driving license in Kenya

A driving license is a document that permits one to drive a vehicle on the road. If you want to acquire it, you have to follow the procedure laid down by the laws of Kenya. But first, you need to meet the set requirements.

The requirements for getting a driving license in Kenya are:

  • Be of 16 or 18 years or more for a motorcycle license or motor vehicle license respectively
  • A copy of your national identity card and two passport photos.
  • A duly filled form VII from the District Commissioner or Road Transport Department. It is a must to have proof of having graduated from a recognized driving school.
  • Undergo and pass a driving test examination conducted by registered test drivers.

Having met all the above requirements, you will get your driving license by following these steps:

  • Login to the e-Citizen portal by entering your email address and password. If you don’t have an e-Citizen account, create one.
  • Select the National Transport and Safety Authority tab
  • Click on driving license NC application
  • Fill the required information, that is:
    • Test drive booking type
    • Licensed test driver
    • Booking number
  • Verify that you have provided the correct information then click on Submit.
  • A fee of 750 will be charged for the process. You can use one of the payment options that suit you.
  • After submission of a successful application, you can now print an interim driving license to use while you await the final document.

The final driving license is usually issued after 14 working days. The instructions on how to collect your license are sent via email or text message. You should physically present yourself to pick your driving license. Make sure you carry proof of identity.
