There are different classes of driving licenses in Kenya depending on the description of the vehicle and the restrictions imposed on the license holder.

The fees for processing a driving license is the same for all the classes, i.e., Kes 750. The different driving License according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is discussed in this article.

1. Class A

The different driving licenses here are:

  • A1: For moped.
  • A2: For light motorcycle
  • A3: For motorcycle taxi, couriers and three-wheelers.

No passenger is allowed for A1. For A2 and A3, a passenger is allowed.

2. Class B

Under this category, we have:

  • B1: For light vehicle
  • B2: For light vehicles with automatic gear.
  • B3: For professionals; the holder can drive vehicles equipped with manual or automatic gear.

The vehicles in this class should have a maximum capacity of 7 passengers. The Gross Vehicle Weight should not be more than 3500 Kg with a trailer of not more than 750 Kg.

3. Class C

The licenses under this class are:

  • C1: For light trucks.
  • C: For medium truck.
  • CE: For a heavy truck with trailer.
  • CD: For heavy goods vehicles for the transportation of hazardous material.

4. Class D

The categories here are:

  • D1: For van
  • D2: For Minibus
  • D3: For large bus

The maximum number of passengers that can be carried by the license holder of each is 18, 32 and 33.

5. Class E

This is a special professional drivers’ license given to persons of 21 years and above. The categories here depend on the vehicle category and they are EC1, EC, ECE, ED1, ED2, ED and ECD. EC, for example, is for category C (medium truck) vehicles.

6. Class F

This is a special drivers’ license for people with disabilities. Just like Class E licenses, it depends on the vehicle category. It includes: FA1, FA2, FA3, FB, FC1, FC, FCE, FCD, FD1, FD2 and FD3.

7. Class G

It is a driving license class for industrial construction and agricultural plants and equipment.

Those are the various driving license classes in Kenya. The differences are with the type of vehicles and restrictions.
